Devarim/Deuteronomy 20:10-21:9
10) When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it. |
11) And it shall be, if it makes peace with you, and opens to you, then all the people that are found therein shall be tributaries to you, and they shall serve you. |
12) And if it will not make peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it. |
13) And when the Lord your God has delivered it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword. |
14) But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall take for yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you. |
15) Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. |
16) But of the cities of these peoples, which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall not let any soul live, |
17) But you shall utterly destroy them—the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—as the Lord your God has commanded you, |
18) So that they may not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done for their gods, and you would sin against the Lord your God. |
19) When you besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you? |
20) Only the trees that you know are not for food, those you may destroy and cut down, that you may build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls. |
Chapter 21
1) If one be found slain in the land which the Lord your God gives you to possess, lying in the field, and it is not known who struck him, |
2) Then your elders and your judges shall go out, and they shall measure to the cities which are around the slain. |
3) And it shall be, the city which is nearest to the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd, which has not been worked with, and which has not drawn in the yoke. |
4) And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to a rugged valley, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer’s neck there in the valley. |
5) And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come near—for them the Lord your God has chosen to serve Him, and to bless in the name of the Lord; and according to their word shall every dispute and every plague be settled— |
6) And all the elders of that city, who are nearest to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley. |
7) And they shall speak and say: Our hands have not shed this blood, nor have our eyes seen it. |
8) Forgive, O Lord, Your people Israel, whom You have redeemed, and do not allow innocent blood to remain in the midst of Your people Israel. And the blood shall be forgiven them. |
9) So shall you put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when you do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. |
