Parashat Shoftim 5th Portion

Devarim/Deuteronomy 18:14-19:13

Chapter 18

14) For these nations, which you are dispossessing, listen to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do so.

15) A prophet from your midst, from your brothers, like me, will the Lord your God raise up for you; to him you shall listen.

16) According to all that you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, nor let me see this great fire any more, so that I not die.”

17) And the Lord said to me, “They have spoken well in what they have said.

18) I will raise up for them a prophet from among their brothers, like you; and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

19) And it shall be, that whoever does not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I will require it of him.

20) But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet shall die.

21) And if you say in your heart, “How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?”

22) When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously—you shall not be afraid of him.

Chapter 19

1) When the Lord your God cuts off the nations, whose land the Lord your God gives you, and you inherit them, and dwell in their cities and in their houses,

2) You shall set apart three cities for yourself in the midst of your land, which the Lord your God gives you to possess.

3) You shall prepare the way, and divide the borders of your land, which the Lord your God causes you to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee there.

4) And this is the case of the manslayer who shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unintentionally, and he did not hate him in time past,

5) As when a man goes with his neighbor into the forest to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies—he shall flee to one of these cities and live.

6) Lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; whereas he was not deserving of death, since he had not hated him in time past.

7) Therefore I command you, saying: You shall set apart three cities for yourself.

8) And if the Lord your God enlarges your border, as He has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which He promised to give to your fathers,

9) If you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in His ways always—then you shall add three more cities to these three.

10) So that innocent blood not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance, and bloodguilt be upon you.

11) But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises against him, and strikes him so that he dies, and then flees into one of these cities,

12) Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him from there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

13) Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.
