Devarim/Deuteronomy 16:18-17:13
18) Judges and officers you shall appoint for yourself in all your gates that the Lord your God gives you, for your tribes; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. |
19) You shall not twist justice; you shall not show favoritism; and you shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous. |
20) Justice, justice you shall pursue, so that you may live and inherit the land that the Lord your God gives you. |
21) You shall not plant for yourself an Asherah, any tree, beside the altar of the Lord your God which you shall make for yourself. |
22) Nor shall you set up for yourself a pillar, which the Lord your God hates. |
Chapter 17
1) You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep in which there is a blemish, any evil thing, for that is an abomination to the Lord your God. |
2) If there is found among you, within any of your gates which the Lord your God gives you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, transgressing His covenant, |
3) And has gone and served other gods and bowed to them, or to the sun, or to the moon, or to all the host of heaven, which I have not commanded, |
4) And it is told to you and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently, and behold, if it is true and the thing certain that this abomination has been done in Israel, |
5) Then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has done this evil thing, to your gates, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones, so that they die. |
6) At the mouth of two witnesses or three witnesses shall he that is to die be put to death; he shall not be put to death at the mouth of one witness. |
7) The hand of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people; so you shall purge the evil from your midst. |
8) If a matter of judgment is too difficult for you—between blood and blood, between verdict and verdict, between plague and plague, matters of dispute within your gates—then you shall arise and go up to the place which the Lord your God shall choose. |
9) And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge that shall be in those days, and inquire; and they shall declare to you the sentence of judgment. |
10) And you shall act according to the word that they declare to you from that place which the Lord shall choose, and you shall observe to do according to all that they instruct you. |
11) According to the Torah that they teach you, and according to the judgment that they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside from the word that they declare to you, to the right or to the left. |
12) And the man that acts presumptuously, not listening to the priest who stands to serve there before the Lord your God, or to the judge, that man shall die; so you shall purge the evil from Israel. |
13) And all the people shall hear, and fear, and shall no longer act presumptuously. |
