Chapters 10-17
Chapter 10
1) Why, Lord, do You stand far away? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? |
א. לָמָה יְיָ תַּעֲמֹד בְּרָחוֹק תַּעְלִים לְעִתּוֹת בַּצָּרוֹת |
2) In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor; let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. |
ב. בְּגַאֲוַת רָשָׁע יִדְלַק עָנִי יִתָּפְשׂוּ בִּמְזִמּוֹת זוּ חָשָׁבוּ |
3) For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire, and the covetous renounces and despises the Lord. |
ג. כִּי־הִלֵּל רָשָׁע עַל־תַּאֲוַת נַפְשׁוֹ וּבֹצֵעַ בֵּרֵךְ נִאֵץ יְיָ |
4) The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, says: “He will not inquire.” All his thoughts are: “There is no God.” |
ד. רָשָׁע כְּגֹבַהּ אַפּוֹ בַּל־יִדְרֹשׁ אֵין אֱלֹהִים כָּל־מְזִמּוֹתָיו |
5) His ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are far above him; as for all his foes, he snorts at them. |
ה. יָחִילוּ דְרָכָיו בְּכָל־עֵת מָרוֹם מִשְׁפָּטֶיךָ מִנֶּגְדּוֹ כָּל־צוֹרְרָיו יָפִיחַ בָּהֶם |
6) He says in his heart: “I shall not be moved, through all generations; I shall never be in adversity.” |
ו. אָמַר בְּלִבּוֹ בַּל־אֶמּוֹט לְדוֹר וָדוֹר אֲשֶׁר לֹא בְרָעָה |
7) His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. |
ז. אָלָה פִּיהוּ מָלֵא וּמִרְמוֹת וָתֹךְ תַּחַת לְשׁוֹנוֹ עָמָל וָאָוֶן |
8) He sits in ambush in the villages; in hidden places he murders the innocent; his eyes lurk for the helpless. |
ח. יֵשֵׁב בְּמַאֲרַב חֲצֵרִים בַּמִּסְתָּרִים יַהֲרֹג נָקִי עֵינָיו לַחֵלְכָה יִצְפֹּנוּ |
9) He lies in wait in a secret place like a lion in his den; he lies in wait to seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. |
ט. יֶאֱרֹב בַּמִּסְתָּר כְּאַרְיֵה בְסֻכֹּה יֶאֱרֹב לַחֲטוֹף עָנִי יַחֲטֹף עָנִי בְּמָשְׁכוֹ בְרִשְׁתוֹ |
10) He crouches, he bows down; the helpless fall by his strong ones. |
י. וְדַכָּאוֹ יָשֹׁחַ וְנָפַל בַּעֲצוּמָיו חֵלְכָּה |
11) He says in his heart: “God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see.” |
יא. אָמַר בְּלִבּוֹ שָׁכַח אֵל הִסְתִּיר פָּנָיו בַּל־רָאָה לָנֶצַח |
12) Arise, Lord! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble. |
יב. קוּמָה יְיָ אֵל נְשָׂא יָדֶךָ אַל־תִּשְׁכַּח עֲנָוִים |
13) Why does the wicked despise God, and say in his heart: “You will not require it”? |
יג. עַל־מַה נִאֵץ רָשָׁע אֱלֹהִים אָמַר בְּלִבּוֹ לֹא תִדְרֹשׁ |
14) You have seen, for You behold trouble and grief, to take it into Your hand. The helpless leaves it to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. |
יד. רָאִיתָ כִּי־אַתָּה עָמָל וָכַעַס תַּבִּיט לָתֵת בְּיָדֶךָ עָלֶיךָ יַעֲזֹב חֵלֶכָה יָתוֹם אַתָּה הָיִיתָ עֹזֵר |
15) Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; seek out his wickedness until none remains. |
טו. שְׁבֹר זְרוֹעַ רָשָׁע וָרָע תִּדְרֹשׁ רִשְׁעוֹ בַל־תִּמְצָא |
16) The Lord is King forever and ever; nations have perished from His land. |
טז. יְיָ מֶלֶךְ עוֹלָם וָעֶד אָבְדוּ גוֹיִם מֵאַרְצוֹ |
17) Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You prepare their heart; You cause Your ear to listen, |
יז. תַּאֲוַת עֲנָוִים שָׁמַעְתָּ יְיָ תָּכִין לִבָּם תַּקְשִׁיב אָזְנֶךָ |
18) To judge the orphan and the oppressed, so that man, who is of the earth, may strike terror no more. |
יח. לִשְׁפֹּט יָתוֹם וָדָךְ בַּל־יוֹסִיף עוֹד לַעֲרֹץ אֱנוֹשׁ מִן־הָאָרֶץ |
Chapter 11
1) For the leader. Of David. In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, “Flee like a bird to your mountain”? |
א. לַמְנַצֵּחַ לְדָוִד בַּייּ בָּחָסִיתִי אֵיךְ תֹּאמְרוּ לְנַפְשִׁי נוּדוּ הַרְכֶם צִפּוֹר |
2) For behold, the wicked bend the bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, to shoot in darkness at the upright in heart. |
ב. כִּי הִנֵּה הָרְשָׁעִים יִדְרְכוּן קֶשֶׁת כּוֹנְנוּ חִצָּם עַל־יֶתֶר לִירוֹת בְּמוֹ־אֹפֶל לְיִשְׁרֵי־לֵב |
3) When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? |
ג. כִּי הַשָּׁתוֹת יֵהָרֵסוּן צַדִּיק מַה־פָּעָל |
4) The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the children of man. |
ד. יְיָ בְּהֵיכַל קָדְשׁוֹ יְיָ בַּשָּׁמַיִם כִּסְאוֹ עֵינָיו יֶחֱזוּ עַפְעַפָּיו יִבְחֲנוּ בְּנֵי אָדָם |
5) The Lord tests the righteous; but the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. |
ה. יְיָ צַדִּיק יִבְחָן וְרָשָׁע וְאֹהֵב חָמָס שָׂנְאָה נַפְשׁוֹ |
6) Upon the wicked He will rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. |
ו. יַמְטֵר עַל־רְשָׁעִים פַּחִים אֵשׁ וְגָפְרִית וְרוּחַ זִלְעָפוֹת מְנָת כּוֹסָם |
7) For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteousness; the upright shall behold His face. |
ז. כִּי־צַדִּיק יְיָ צְדָקוֹת אָהֵב יָשָׁר יֶחֱזוּ פָנֵימוֹ |
Chapter 12
1) For the leader; upon the Sheminith. A psalm of David. |
א. לַמְנַצֵּחַ עַל־הַשְּׁמִינִית מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד |
2) Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases; for the faithful fail from among the children of men. |
ב. הוֹשִׁיעָה יְיָ כִּי־גָמַר חָסִיד כִּי־פַסּוּ אֱמוּנִים מִבְּנֵי אָדָם |
3) They speak falsehood every one with his neighbor; with flattering lips and with a double heart they speak. |
ג. שָׁוְא יְדַבְּרוּ אִישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ שְׂפַת חֲלָקוֹת בְּלֵב וָלֵב יְדַבֵּרוּ |
4) The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that speaks proud things, |
ד. יַכְרֵת יְיָ כָּל־שִׂפְתוֹת חֲלָקוֹת לָשׁוֹן מְדַבֶּרֶת גְּדֹלוֹת |
5) Who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail; our lips are with us; who is lord over us?” |
ה. אֲשֶׁר אָמְרוּ לִלְשֹׁנֵנוּ נַגְבִּיר שְׂפָתֵינוּ אִתָּנוּ מִי אָדוֹן לָנוּ |
6) “Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy, now will I arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in safety at whom they puff.” |
ו. מִשֹּׁד עֲנִיִּים מֵאַנְקַת אֶבְיוֹנִים עַתָּה אָקוּם יֹאמַר יְיָ אָשִׁית בְּיֵשַׁע יָפִיחַ לוֹ |
7) The words of the Lord are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times. |
ז. אִמְרוֹת יְיָ אֲמָרוֹת טְהֹרוֹת כֶּסֶף צָרוּף בַּעֲלִיל לָאָרֶץ מְזֻקָּק שִׁבְעָתָיִם |
8) You, Lord, shall keep them; You shall preserve them from this generation forever. |
ח. אַתָּה יְיָ תִּשְׁמְרֵם תִּצְּרֶנּוּ מִן־הַדּוֹר זוּ לְעוֹלָם |
9) The wicked walk all around, when vileness is exalted among the children of men. |
ט. סָבִיב רְשָׁעִים יִתְהַלָּכוּן כְּרֻם זֻלּוֹת לִבְנֵי אָדָם |
Chapter 13
1) For the leader. A psalm of David. |
א. לַמְנַצֵּחַ מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד |
2) How long, Lord, will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? |
ב. עַד־אָנָה יְיָ תִּשְׁכָּחֵנִי נֶצַח עַד־אָנָה תַסְתִּיר אֶת־פָּנֶיךָ מִמֶּנִּי |
3) How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? |
ג. עַד־אָנָה אָשִׁית עֵצוֹת בְּנַפְשִׁי יָגוֹן בִּלְבָבִי יוֹמָם עַד־אָנָה יָרוּם אֹיְבִי עָלָי |
4) Look, answer me, Lord my God; give light to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, |
ד. הַבִּיטָה עֲנֵנִי יְיָ אֱלֹהָי הָאִירָה עֵינַי פֶּן־אִישַׁן הַמָּוֶת |
5) Lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him,” lest my adversaries rejoice when I am shaken. |
ה. פֶּן־יֹאמַר אֹיְבִי יְכַלְתִּיו צוֹרְרַי יָגִילוּ כִּי אֶמּוֹט |
6) But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me. |
ו. וַאֲנִי בְּחַסְדְּךָ בָטַחְתִּי יָגֵל לִבִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ אָשִׁירָה לַייּ כִּי גָמַל עָלָי |
Chapter 14
1) For the leader. Of David. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They have acted corruptly, they have done abominable deeds; there is none who does good. |
א. לַמְנַצֵּחַ לְדָוִד אָמַר נָבָל בְּלִבּוֹ אֵין אֱלֹהִים הִשְׁחִיתוּ הִתְעִיבוּ עֲלִילָה אֵין עֹשֵׂה־טוֹב |
2) The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any who understand, who seek after God. |
ב. יְיָ מִשָּׁמַיִם הִשְׁקִיף עַל־בְּנֵי אָדָם לִרְאוֹת הֲיֵשׁ מַשְׂכִּיל דֹּרֵשׁ אֶת־אֱלֹהִים |
3) They are all gone aside, together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. |
ג. הַכֹּל סָר יַחְדָּו נֶאֱלָחוּ אֵין עֹשֵׂה־טוֹב אֵין גַּם־אֶחָד |
4) Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the Lord? |
ד. הֲלֹא יָדְעוּ כָּל־פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן אֹכְלֵי עַמִּי אָכְלוּ לֶחֶם יְיָ לֹא קָרָאוּ |
5) There they were in great fear, for God is with the generation of the righteous. |
ה. שָׁם פָּחֲדוּ פָחַד כִּי אֱלֹהִים בְּדוֹר צַדִּיק |
6) You would put to shame the counsel of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge. |
ו. עֲצַת עָנִי תָבִישׁוּ כִּי יְיָ מַחְסֵהוּ |
7) Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the captivity of His people, Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad. |
ז. מִי יִתֵּן מִצִּיּוֹן יְשׁוּעַת יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּשׁוּב יְיָ שְׁבוּת עַמּוֹ יָגֵל יַעֲקֹב יִשְׂמַח יִשְׂרָאֵל |
Chapter 15
1) A psalm of David. Lord, who shall sojourn in Your tent? Who shall dwell on Your holy mountain? |
א. מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד יְיָ מִי־יָגוּר בְּאָהֳלֶךָ מִי־יִשְׁכֹּן בְּהַר קָדְשֶׁךָ |
2) He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart. |
ב. הוֹלֵךְ תָּמִים וּפֹעֵל צֶדֶק וְדֹבֵר אֱמֶת בִּלְבָבוֹ |
3) He does not slander with his tongue, does no evil to his neighbor, and does not bring reproach upon his relative. |
ג. לֹא־רָגַל עַל־לְשֹׁנוֹ לֹא־עָשָׂה לְרֵעֵהוּ רָעָה וְחֶרְפָּה לֹא־נָשָׂא עַל־קְרֹבוֹ |
4) In whose eyes a vile person is despised, but he honors those who fear the Lord; he swears to his own hurt, and does not change. |
ד. נִבְזֶה בְּעֵינָיו נִמְאָס וְאֶת־יִרְאֵי יְיָ יְכַבֵּד נִשְׁבַּע לְהָרַע וְלֹא יָמִר |
5) He does not put out his money at interest, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved. |
ה. כַּסְפּוֹ לֹא־נָתַן בְּנֶשֶׁךְ וְשֹׁחַד עַל־נָקִי לֹא לָקָח עֹשֵׂה־אֵלֶּה לֹא יִמּוֹט לְעוֹלָם |
Chapter 16
1) A michtam of David. Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge. |
א. מִכְתָּם לְדָוִד שָׁמְרֵנִי אֵל כִּי־חָסִיתִי בָךְ |
2) I said to the Lord, “You are my Master; I have no good apart from You.” |
ב. אָמַרְתְּ לַייּ אֲדֹנָי אָתָּה טוֹבָתִי בַל־עָלֶיךָ |
3) As for the holy ones who are in the earth, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight. |
ג. לִקְדוֹשִׁים אֲשֶׁר־בָּאָרֶץ הֵמָּה וְאַדִּירֵי כָּל־חֶפְצִי־בָם |
4) Their sorrows shall be multiplied who run after another god; their libations of blood I will not offer, nor will I take their names upon my lips. |
ד. יִרְבּוּ עַצְּבוֹתָם אַחֵר מָהָרוּ בַל־אַסִּיךְ נִסְכֵּיהֶם מִדָּם וּבַל־אֶשָּׂא אֶת־שְׁמוֹתָם עַל־שְׂפָתָי |
5) The Lord is my portion and my cup; You maintain my lot. |
ה. יְיָ מְנָת־חֶלְקִי וְכוֹסִי אַתָּה תּוֹמִיךְ גּוֹרָלִי |
6) The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, a beautiful inheritance is mine. |
ו. חֲבָלִים נָפְלוּ־לִי בַנְּעִמִים אַף־נַחֲלָת שָׁפְרָה עָלָי |
7) I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; even in the nights my heart instructs me. |
ז. אֲבָרֵךְ אֶת־יְיָ אֲשֶׁר יְעָצָנִי אַף־לֵילוֹת יִסְּרוּנִי כִלְיוֹתָי |
8) I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. |
ח. שִׁוִּיתִי יְיָ לְנֶגְדִּי תָמִיד כִּי מִימִינִי בַּל־אֶמּוֹט |
9) Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also shall dwell securely. |
ט. לָכֵן שָׂמַח לִבִּי וַיָּגֶל כְּבוֹדִי אַף־בְּשָׂרִי יִשְׁכֹּן לָבֶטַח |
10) For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You allow Your faithful one to see destruction. |
י. כִּי לֹא־תַעֲזֹב נַפְשִׁי לִשְׁאוֹל לֹא־תִתֵּן חֲסִידְךָ לִרְאוֹת שָׁחַת |
11) You will make known to me the path of life; fullness of joy is in Your presence, pleasures are at Your right hand forever. |
יא. תּוֹדִיעֵנִי אֹרַח חַיִּים שֹׂבַע שְׂמָחוֹת אֶת־פָּנֶיךָ נְעִמוֹת בִּימִינְךָ נֶצַח |
Chapter 17
1) A prayer of David. Hear, O Lord, righteousness; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer, spoken without deceitful lips. |
א. תְּפִלָּה לְדָוִד שִׁמְעָה יְיָ צֶדֶק הַקְשִׁיבָה רִנָּתִי הַאֲזִינָה תְפִלָּתִי בְּלֹא שִׂפְתֵי מִרְמָה |
2) From before You let my judgment come forth; let Your eyes behold what is upright. |
ב. מִלְּפָנֶיךָ מִשְׁפָּטִי יֵצֵא עֵינֶיךָ תֶחֱזֶינָה מֵישָׁרִים |
3) You have tested my heart, You have visited me by night, You have tried me and found nothing; my mouth does not transgress. |
ג. בָּחַנְתָּ לִבִּי פָּקַדְתָּ לַיְלָה צְרַפְתַּנִי בַל־תִּמְצָא זַמֹּתִי בַל־יַעֲבָר־פִּי |
4) As for the deeds of men—by the word of Your lips I have kept myself from the paths of the violent. |
ד. לִפְעֻלּוֹת אָדָם בִּדְבַר שְׂפָתֶיךָ אֲנִי שָׁמַרְתִּי אָרְחוֹת פָּרִיץ |
5) Uphold my steps in Your paths, that my feet may not slip. |
ה. תָּמֹךְ אֲשֻׁרַי בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתֶיךָ בַּל־נָמוֹטּוּ פְעָמָי |
6) I have called upon You, for You will answer me, O God; incline Your ear to me, hear my words. |
ו. אֲנִי קְרָאתִיךָ כִּי תַעֲנֵנִי אֵל הַט־אָזְנְךָ לִי שְׁמַע אִמְרָתִי |
7) Show Your marvelous kindness, You who save with Your right hand those who seek refuge from their adversaries. |
ז. הַפְלֵה חֲסָדֶיךָ מוֹשִׁיעַ חוֹסִים מִמִּתְקוֹמְמִים בִּימִינֶךָ |
8) Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings. |
ח. שָׁמְרֵנִי כְּאִישׁוֹן בַּת־עָיִן בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ תַּסְתִּירֵנִי |
9) From the wicked who oppress me, from my deadly enemies who surround me. |
ט. מִפְּנֵי רְשָׁעִים זוֹ שַׁדּוּנִי אֹיְבַי בְּנֶפֶשׁ יַקִּיפוּ עָלָי |
10) They are enclosed in their own fat; with their mouth they speak proudly. |
י. חֵלֶבָּמוֹ סָגְרוּ פִּימוֹ דִּבְּרוּ בְגֵאוּת |
11) Our steps they now surround; they set their eyes to cast us down to the ground. |
יא. אַשּׁוּרֵינוּ עַתָּה סְבָבוּנִי עֵינֵיהֶם יָשִׁיתוּ לִנְטוֹת בָּאָרֶץ |
12) Like a lion eager to tear its prey, like a young lion lurking in hiding places. |
יב. דִּמְיוֹנוֹ כְּאַרְיֵה יִכְסֹף לִטְרֹף וְכִכְפִיר יוֹשֵׁב בַּמִּסְתָּרִים |
13) Arise, O Lord, confront him, bring him down; deliver my soul from the wicked with Your sword. |
יג. קוּמָה יְיָ קַדְּמָה פָנָיו הַכְרִיעֵהוּ פַלְּטָה נַפְשִׁי מֵרָשָׁע חַרְבֶּךָ |
14) From men, by Your hand, O Lord, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their belly with Your treasure; they are satisfied with children, and leave their abundance to their little ones. |
יד. מִמְּתִים יָדְךָ יְיָ מִמְּתִים מֵחֶלֶד חֶלְקָם בַּחַיִּים וּצְפוּנְךָ תְּמַלֵּא בִטְנָם יִשְׂבְּעוּ בָנִים וְהִנִּיחוּ יִתְרָם לְעוֹלְלֵיהֶם |
15) As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Your likeness. |
טו. אֲנִי בְּצֶדֶק אֶחֱזֶה פָנֶיךָ אֶשְׂבְּעָה בְהָקִיץ תְּמוּנָתֶךָ |
